BEETHOVEN'S PASTORAL SYMPHONY
Ludwig van Beethoven named his sixth symphony the Pastoral, describing his love of the countryside. Ernest Chausson’s song cycle Poème de l’amour et de la mer (Poem of love and the sea) portrays the flowers of the sea and the death of love, and in Jean Sibelius’ dance intermezzo Pan and Echo, the shepherd god Pan’s chasing of the nymph Echo is set to music. Spanish conductor Roberto González-Monjas leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Italian baritone Andrè Schuen in this concert where the love of, and in, nature takes center stage.
Participants
The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra is a multiple-award-winning ensemble renowned for its high artistic standard and stylistic breadth, as well as collaborations with the world’s finest composers, conductors, and soloists. It regularly tours all over Europe and the world and has an extensive and acclaimed recording catalogue.
Daniel Harding has been Music Director of the SRSO since 2007, and since 2019 also its Artistic Director. His tenure will last throughout the 2024/2025 season. Two of the orchestra’s former chief conductors, Herbert Blomstedt and Esa-Pekka Salonen, have since been named Conductors Laureate, and continue to perform regularly with the orchestra.
The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra performs at Berwaldhallen, concert hall of the Swedish Radio, and is a cornerstone of Swedish public service broadcasting. Its concerts are heard weekly on the Swedish classical radio P2 and regularly on national public television SVT. Several concerts are also streamed on-demand on Berwaldhallen Play and broadcast globally through the EBU.
Violinist and conductor Roberto González-Monjas was born in 1988 in Valladolid, Spain. He studied with Igor Ozim at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, and with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He has served as concertmaster of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and of the Musikkollegium Winterthur, which appointed him as its chief conductor in 2021. From 2019 to 2023 he was artistic advisor to the Dalasinfonietta, and 2022, he became Principal Guest Conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra. From 2024, González-Monjas has been appointed Chief Conductor of the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra.
As a soloist and conductor, González-Monjas has collaborated with orchestras such as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Berlin Baroque Soloists, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, the Orchestre national d’Île de France, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Camerata Salzburg.
As a violinist, he plays a violin built in 1710 by violin maker Giuseppe Giovanni Guarneri, and made his debut with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra last season.
Baritone Andrè Schuen grew up speaking three languages and playing the cello as his main instrument, a versatility that is reflected in his current vocal repertoire.
In the field of opera, Schuen is highly sought after internationally. In the current season he will sing Conte in the new production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at the Vienna State Opera, as well as two Wagner roles: Heerrufer in the new production of Lohengrin at the Bavarian State Opera and his debut as Wolfram in Tannhäuser at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. He is also a regular guest at major opera festivals, most recently at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Salzburg Festival.
Schuen made his debut at the Lucerne Festival with Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen in 2022. Past highlights on the concert stage include appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle, WDR Symphony Orchestra under Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala under Riccardo Chailly.
Lied singing is particularly important to Schuen. This season, recitals will take him back to the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, the Konzerthaus Wien and Teatro de la Zarzuela Madrid. Since 2021, Schuen has been an Exclusive Recording Artist for Deutsche Grammophon. After Schubert’ Die Schöne Müllerin and Schwanengesang, the release of Winterreise in 2024 completed his recording of all three Schubert song cycles for the ”Yellow Label”.
